This serene sculpture is hailed from 10 century AD; excavated from Rohatak and now preserved at Lahore Pakistan's museum. This image is of 16th Teerthankara Shantinatha.Lord Shantinatha is in padmasana posture seated on cushioned seat on lion throne. This pious sculpture is mutilated as it's right leg and right hand are absent. Broad face, long ear lobes, open chest with Shrivatsa icon, long cross legs, schematic curls of top knot and meditative eyes proves it as a complete Jaina sculpture. Triple umbrella is canopied over lord Shantinatha. Eight petaled halo is behind lord's head. Two fly whisk bearers are present on both side of Jina. These fly whisk bearers are standing on lotus and curved in triple flexton posture. Two celestial couples are depicted on either side of jina above the fly whisk bearers with music instruments. Two elephants with usual trappings and with haudhas are depicted. Two outward moving lions are depicted under pedestal separated by a wheel.Yaksha Sarvanubhuti and Yakshi Ambika are also carved at bottom of the image where ambika is depicted with Amralumbi, child and seated on lion. Yaksha Sarvanubhuti is depicted with "Nakulaka" and "Bijapurak" wearing armlets, anklet, dhoti and pearl necklace. Some scholars like M.C. Joshi and A.D. Bhattacharya also acceded that Rohatak's Jain images could be of 10 century AD |
